High Point Community

High Point is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and along with Winston-Salem and Greensboro, forms the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina. The population of the Triad is around 1.3 million people, and High Point has a population of approximately 75,000.  High Point is centrally positioned along the east coast of the United States, with convenient access to several interstate highways and Piedmont Triad International Airport.

High Point is distinguished by rapid business and population growth in many areas, including the home furnishings market.  High Point takes pride in calling itself the “Home Furnishings Capitol of the World".

High Point has an eye on the future, too, with an urban development plan that emphasizes preservation of green belts blended with low density, quality residential development. Educational opportunities include primary and secondary magnet schools, tech-prep training and continuing educational opportunities at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Cultural life in High Point includes a wide variety of venues in the arts and entertainment, including the Carousel Theatre (live, professional children's theatre productions), High Point Ballet, High Point Community Concert Association, High Point Community Theatre (volunteer actors and stage crew present two major musicals and a drama or comedy each year to audiences totaling over 6,000), and the High Point Fine Art Guild.  In addition, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, established in 1976, is North Carolina's most accomplished professional theater company. Another local group is the Piedmont Artists, which showcases talent from the Piedmont area as part of an annual concert series.

High Point Museum and Historical Park offers changing exhibits on Piedmont history; lectures, discussions and hands-on craft classes (weaving, basket-making and candle-dipping); and a number of special events, including Colonial reenactments and period musical performances on the two-acre Historical Park grounds. The Historical Park features three buildings, all over 200 years old, including the 1786 Haley House on the National Register of Historic Places.

High Point Theatre, a 1,000-seat facility owned and operated by the City of High Point, sponsors a variety of national touring productions and celebrity performers as part of the annual Star-Spangled Series.

Theatre Art Galleries, Inc. (TAG), housed in the High Point Theatre and Exhibition Center, features an ongoing series of approximately 10 annual visual art exhibitions. TAG also schedules a lecture series and art trips for adults, and an after-school, hands-on art program for children.

John Coltrane Cultural Workshop provides a summer jazz camp for middle and high school students and presents Master Class sessions throughout the year featuring professional jazz musicians.
