In November 2009, we welcomed the Reverend David Umphlett as the ninth Rector of St. Mary's Church.  Before being called to St. Mary’s, he served as Rector of Grace Church, Plymouth, NC and St. Luke’s/St. Anne’s, Roper, NC.  A native of Wilmington, NC, he graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (B.Music, 2000) and Virginia Theological Seminary (M.Div., 2004). In the Diocese of East Carolina, David served on the Executive Council and the Liturgical Commission, worked with the Happening Youth Movement, and was a Deputy at General Convention 2009.  In the Diocese of North Carolina, David serves on the Liturgical Commission and the Fair Share Appeals Board, while also remaining active in Youth Ministry.  He and his wife Lorinda have two young sons.

On June 21 2010, the Reverend Sara Palmer of the Diocese of North Carolina joined Saint Mary’s as Assistant to the Rector.  Prior to being called to Saint Mary’s, Sara attended Virginia Theological Seminary, graduating in May 2010 magna cum laude with her M.Div. degree.  Sara (nee Harding) grew up in the county of Surrey, England, gained her B.A. Hons. in French and Latin from Bristol University, and her Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from King Alfred’s Teachers’ Training College in Winchester.  After two years, Sara left her job teaching French and German in a junior high/high school to train to become a missionary in South America.  She attended Cliff Bible College, Sheffield, and the Lebanon Missionary College in Berwick-on-Tweed before a three month orientation in Sevilla, Spain.  She met and married her American husband, David Palmer in 1986 in Bolivia, South America, where they planted a new congregation in Santa Cruz.  They moved to the USA in 1987.  Sara served for five years as Lay Hispanic Missioner for the Yadkin Valley Cluster, in Salisbury, North Carolina, from 2002 to 2007 before attending Virginia Theological Seminary.  Sara and David have one grown son, Steven.

The Rev'd Nathan Finnin acts as Priest Associate with St. Mary's while serving as the full-time Chaplain at the Canterbury School in Greensboro, NC.  He worships regularly with the parish, assists liturgically, and teaches occasional classes.  He is a 2004 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A in Philosophy and a 2008 graduate of Berkley Divinity School at Yale with the Masters of Divinity degree. Nathan enjoys live music, good books, and spending time with his fiancé Kaitlin.

Staff

 

 

 

Dr. Harold Andrews, organist and choirmaster, holds a Doctorate in organ music from Boston University, as well as a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree in organ music from Oberlin Conservatory.  He held the position of Professor of Organ Music at Greensboro College, and has been organist and choirmaster at St. Mary's for many years. Dr. Andrews has also been building pipe organs professionally since 1991 through his own company, Organcraft.

In September 2011, we welcomed Dr. Charles Hogan as the newest member of our staffDr. Hogan begins his work as the Director of Youth Choirs in the first week of October.  He comes to us most recently after having served as the interim Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal), Cincinnati, where he also founded a professional chamber choir, Faburden.  Before that, among other positions, he served as interim Associate Director of Music and Organist at First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, and as Minister of Music at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, Burlington.  While in Burlington, he founded the Alamance Girls Choir.  He is also the past coordinator of the nationwide summer training courses for the Royal School of Church Music.

 

His musical compositions are widely performed and his other writings have garnered praise from some of the nation's leading musicians.  He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and both a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music from the University of Kentucky.  His wife, also a fine musician, serves as the coordinator of the vocal section at Elon University.

 

Charles (or Mr. Charles as he's suggested for the children) will begin rehearsals according to the RSCM curriculum.

St. Mary's Music Academy director, Margaret McDonald, received her Master of Music Education from the UNC-Greensboro, and her Bachelor of Music Education from Greensboro College with a concentration in piano. She is an experienced music educator, having taught in both elementary and middle schools in Guilford County for over 30 years.  Margaret directed the Youth Choir program at St. Mary's for 23 years. Two of those choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Katrina Parnell joined us in January 2011.  She is the mother of three grown children, grandmother of one. She graduated from Elon University with BA in Human Services, triple minor in Sociology, Psychology and Special Education. Katrina has lived in High Point for 23 years and has worked in church business administration for last four years.

Shannon Carter joined us January 1st, 2008.  She has been in the administrative field for over 10 years.  Prior to joining us, Shannon had worked in several different industries and has held numerous positions, including everything from office manager to receptionist.  She comes to us with the experience and knowledge to keep our office running smoothly.  Shannon is married and has a daughter and two step-children.
