Family Literacy Project

What is the Family Literacy Project?  This is the third year St. Mary’s has taken part in this particular Hispanic Ministry. FLP is a collaborative effort between St. Mary’s, GTCC, and the Latino Family Center. Our goal is to increase literacy among Hispanic adults and children. To date, well over 200 adults and children have gone through our program. What’s new?  Our ministry is growing! This year we are hosting the program on Tuesdays and Thursdays- so we are the only location for this Literacy Program. We are also offering three adult classes now. That means we need more volunteers! Volunteers will also be coming in from local colleges and the community as well.  When is it? And what are the dates?  FLP meets at St. Mary’s every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8:30 p.m. The program runs from Tuesday, January 16 to May 5. How does it work?  Every Tuesday and Thursday, Hispanic adults meet in various rooms upstairs in the Education Building. ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers from GTCC will teach them English and other skills, such as applying for a job.  Elsewhere in the Education building, their children will spend time working on academic skills, studying, as well as playing educational games and reading books. Volunteers from St. Mary’s will primarily work with the children, helping them develop important skills for learning English and being successful in school.  Other activities can also be planned for the children for fun or for learning.
